***  A message from Dr Himsel:

Hello everyone,

I wanted to make you aware of some new information regarding graduation pathways.  It appears that we are making positive progress with SB177. Ultimately, if SB177 passes, it will be up to the SBOE to finalize the Indiana Diploma, which is why parent advocacy is so important

I know there is a lot of information contained in this email, but it can be used by parents in your advocacy efforts.  I recommend communications being sent every 6 – 10 days.  Please remember, the effort will not succeed if only parents from Allen County are involved.  Any assistance that can be provided in getting parents from other communities involved will be greatly appreciated. The more broad-based from where the communications come, the better chance of success.  In other words, we need communications being sent to each community’s respective legislators coming from all corners of the state.  If your friends need assistance knowing who their legislators are, they should get the contact information from their local superintendent or by visiting one of the following websites:

               https://www.indianasenaterepublicans.com/senators

               http://indianasenatedemocrats.org/senators/

               http://iga.in.gov/legislative/2018/committees/education_0400

Any response from a legislator or SBOE member that mentions local pathways and other options to create flexibility to address concerns is not good enough.  These local pathways must be approved by the state level personnel which means local communities really are not in control of what happens within this so-called local flexibility.  Likewise, the mirage of this so-called local flexibility does not create schedule slots, waive testing requirements, or remove the “AND” provisions of the new requirements.  Only an Indiana Diploma provides the opportunity to add additional achievements while truly providing students with the safety net needed to address the many situations which have been communicated by individual families. Let them know that you and your family support SB177.

Thank you
